3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings demonstrate the details and function of a concept or design. Computer aided designing is critical to the prototyping process because it allows the designers to quickly change aspects of the concept in a virtual space — prior to physical realization.

Beyond concept iteration, CAD drawings can display design specifications and dimensions in 2D part drawings. Part drawings serve as reference for particular details of a design, or as reference for many manufacturers responsible for constructing or assembling a product.

As a design converges on final revisions, generation of photoreal 3D renders demonstrate what the product will look like once physically realized. 3D renders are often used to win over consumers and investors in a virtual environment, without physically producing the product.
